Paul Paton changes plea to guilty

In a surprise move court re-convened after the adjournment and counsel for Paul Paton told the court that in light of the evidence heard today his client had agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of assault against former Celtic goalkeeper Lucasz Zaluska.

The advocate depute told the court the Crown had agreed to remove charges relating to the disputed "second punch" inflicted on Zaluska and accepted the guilty plea.

Paton's counsel then rose and told the court that in mitigation his client had been the subject of severe provocation by the former Celtic player and now regretted his actions. He had also been fined four weeks wages by his club and now just wished "to put this epsiode behind him and get on with his life."

The presiding Sheriff then asked the accused to stand and said given his previous good character he would limit himself to a financial penalty. The court then fined Paton £500 and gave him one month to pay.

Court then adjourned.
